What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session

Starting therapy can feel scary, and many people wonder: “What happens in the first therapy session?”Here’s a quick guide to help you know what to expect when you begin psychotherapy.

1. Your Therapist Gets to Know You

The first session focuses on what brought you in, what’s been going on, and what you hope to work on. You don’t need to have the “perfect” words—your therapist guides the conversation.

2. Review of Policies and Confidentiality

You’ll go over paperwork, privacy rules, fees, and scheduling. This helps you understand how therapy works and what to expect moving forward.

3. Sharing Your Story at Your Own Pace

You are not expected to tell everything at once. The first 1–3 sessions are about understanding your concerns, symptoms, patterns, and goals—gently and without pressure.

4. Setting Therapy Goals

Your therapist will help you create simple, realistic goals such as reducing anxiety, improving emotional regulation, or managing stress.

5. Ask Questions Anytime

You can ask about the therapist’s approach, what sessions will look like, and how progress is measured. Feeling comfortable with your therapist is important.

6. The First Few Sessions Are for Building Understanding

Therapy becomes more targeted after your therapist understands your needs. Then you’ll begin learning tools, coping skills, and strategies.

7. Feeling Nervous Is Normal

Most people feel anxious before the first session

—but relieved afterward. Therapy is a safe, supportive space for you to grow.
